The more events I lead... The more 'spiritual awakening' books I read... The more I meditate...
The more I realize, my quality of life is determined by my consistent emotional patterns. Let me emphasize the words I used here.
Quality of life: The extent to which I love life.
Consistent: Recurring and pervasive
Emotional pattern: How the body consistently reacts to certain events or humans.
It's not my lifestyle. It's not my job. It's not my community. It's how I feel.
It's less about what you're doing and more about how you feel, emotionally, in the moment.
I can be anywhere on the planet, doing any activity known to man, with whomever I am with, and I can be either sabotaged or rewarded by my existing emotional patterns.
I want to give you an example of each.
Sabotage example. I am in Miami. It's 2021. I am invited onto a yacht with a bunch of millionaires. The captain is angry, and everyone else is on their phones, hardly connecting... Their emotional patterns sabotaged them, even though they were surrounded by wealth and glory.
But they were saved. I turned on my boombox and got all of them ejected out of their unhappiness... Aha!
Take that emotional patterns!
Reward example. Guatemala 2022. I meditated in a pitch-black concrete bunker for 7 days. There were moments of terrific joy and gratitude. I loved life. Of course, there were darker moments too, but you get the point. You can be all alone, disconnected from any enjoyable experience and you can still find joy.
If emotional states are all that matter, then this has implications on how I should prioritize my time. Perhaps, I should spend less time pursuing peak experiences and more time upgrading my emotional patterns.
Because, if I can still be unhappy in spite of the peak experience, that's a problem.
So what can one do? How do I change my emotional patterns and find bliss regardless of my external circumstances?
I have three perspectives to share. 1. Tony Robbins. 2. Ekhart Tolle. 3. My own. Let's jump into some spiritual wisdom y'all.
