Joy is a biological state.

And you can apply biological principles to evoke it right now and make it easier for it to show up the next time.

This is different than the mental approach to joy, so buckle up and keep your mind open. There are two biological approaches to joy.

There is what you do in the here and now. This involves your immediate behaviors and the impact they have on your neurochemistry.

Then there is what you do yesterday. The behaviors that gradually elevate your mood overtime. These behaviors may have immediate effects too, but their impact is much larger when done over and over again. These are the behaviors a lot of people miss.

Let’s begin with immediate joy.

The big principle is this. Whatever physiological state your body is in, you can choose to change it.

You have control over your immediate physiology. Now, you may not be able to maintain the change over time, if you’re clogging your arteries, staying up all night, and consuming junk media… but that doesn’t mean you have no control over a shorter-time horizon.

Over a short time horizon, you have control over your immediate physiology, regardless of your physical health.

How can you immediately shift your physiological state into joy?
