Let’s play a quick game. Which type of social connection feels more fulfilling?

A. Firing off a flurry of texts, emojis, and photos to people you rarely see in person.

B. Sharing physical presence—touch, eye contact, and real conversation—with someone fully engaged, not distracted by their phone.

The answer’s obvious, right?

Constantly staying “connected” through your phone with people far away pulls you out of the moment with those right in front of you.

One of my best moves for embracing this truth? Ditching phone-based communication as much as possible. I’ve let go of the expectation to be reachable 24/7 or to reply instantly. I’ve shifted from being “in touch” with everyone to being selectively “out of touch” with people I don’t see regularly—like international friends, distant lovers, or acquaintances I’m not actively creating with.

Hold up. Yes, I’m saying it: get out of touch with some people. Not the ones you see daily or collaborate with, but those far-flung connections you can easily reconnect with later.
