Dear Connection Catalyst!

This week, I single-handedly started a dance party for 100 people, I rebranded myself around authenticity, and I updated my approach to social rejection.

Today you’ll learn to…

  1. Use social proof to encourage participation.

  2. Attract the people you actually like and want to work with.

  3. Design programs for maximal vulnerability.

  4. Become less SELF-CENTERED.

⚠ This is the public version from last week.

Happiness is the joy you feel moving toward your potential.

WHAT’S INSPIRING ME?

Just Dance was the least promising game series at Ubisoft… until it took over the world by word of mouth.

This game single-handedly got millions of people off the couch dancing together. Disguised as a video game, it is actually a public health invention!

“Within the studio, I think some people were laughing at the Just Dance team… ‘Oh my God, this isn’t a video game. We’re not here to create this kind of stuff. We want to make gamers’ games.’ That kind of thing,”

This is what the founder said in the beginning. No one thought it would succeed.

Just Dance inspires me because I am trying to do the same thing — create a new health practice just as common as watching video games on the couch.

I will emulate Just Dance 😉 This is the video on my vision board.

WHICH VERSION OF YOU?

For fostering belonging & psychological safety, who's better? The Professional YOU or the Informal YOU? Vote in the comments.

My vote, as I read the Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor, is the positive, informal, personal YOU.

We switch on different versions of ourselves for different purposes. When we're fostering connection in our community/team, positivity reigns supreme.

Humans are more prosocial when they're positive.

And so the serious, monotone, affirmative version of yourself is not the right fit for community building.

Agree or disagree?

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?

At a professional conference I attended recently, when people asked ‘What do you do?’ I answered with two answers.

(1) I help leaders connect their people more effectively AND (2) I host giant sober dance parties in my city.

You can too and build your personal community.

WHERE IS JACQUES?

In the Rocky Mountains visiting his mentor.

If you’re serious about designing and leading community experiences for your team, company, friend group, conference… here's how I can help.
